Project Overview

This project involved the full-scale design, procurement, installation, and commissioning of a structured campus-wide network infrastructure. The objective was to replace an aging, unstructured ad-hoc network that suffered from frequent outages, congestion, and security vulnerabilities — with a modern, resilient, scalable LAN/WAN infrastructure capable of supporting the institution's growing digital operations including digital attendance, e-learning systems, administrative portals, and staff communications.

Problem Statement

The existing campus network was built without proper architecture — cables ran unsystematically through buildings, IP addressing was undocumented and conflict-prone, Wi-Fi coverage was absent in key academic zones, and single points of failure caused network-wide outages affecting hundreds of users. The institution urgently needed a professionally designed, redundant network capable of supporting digital transformation initiatives.

Core Contributions

01

Conducted a complete site survey across all 5 campus buildings to map cable routing paths, identify interference zones, and plan equipment placement

02

Designed the full network topology including core switch placement, distribution layer routing, access layer switch stacking, and VLAN segmentation for staff, students, and administration

03

Executed structured Cat6 UTP cable installation with proper cable management trays, labeling, and patch panel terminations across all floors

04

Configured Cisco/TP-Link managed switches with VLAN tagging, port-based access control, and STP (Spanning Tree Protocol) for loop prevention

05

Deployed and configured enterprise-grade Wi-Fi access points across classrooms, labs, corridors, and common areas providing full campus wireless coverage

06

Designed and implemented a hierarchical IP addressing scheme with DHCP scopes, DNS configurations, and static reservations for critical servers

07

Configured firewall rules and network security policies to segment traffic, prevent unauthorized access, and control bandwidth allocation

08

Set up network monitoring using PRTG/Nagios for real-time uptime alerts, bandwidth utilization graphs, and fault detection

09

Maintained full network documentation including topology diagrams, IP address tables, VLAN maps, and device configurations

Key Features & Capabilities

Structured Cat6 UTP Cabling Across 5 Buildings
VLAN Segmentation (Staff, Students, Admin, Guest)
Managed Cisco/TP-Link Switch Configuration
Campus-Wide Wi-Fi Coverage Deployment
Hierarchical DHCP & DNS Architecture
Firewall Rules & Traffic Policy Configuration
STP Loop Prevention & Redundant Uplinks
Network Monitoring & Real-Time Alerting
Full Network Documentation & Topology Maps
Bandwidth Management & QoS Policies

Efficiency & Growth Impact

Network downtime reduced by 60%
the previous ad-hoc network averaged 3–4 outages per week; post-deployment, the infrastructure maintains 99.9% uptime
Network speed improved 4x
students and staff now experience consistent gigabit speeds internally versus the previous inconsistent 10–100Mbps bottlenecks
IP conflict incidents eliminated
zero IP conflicts reported post-deployment due to proper DHCP architecture and documentation
Wi-Fi dead zones reduced from covering 40% of campus to 0%, enabling institution-wide digital services
Support tickets related to connectivity issues dropped by 75%, freeing IT staff to focus on higher-value tasks
VLAN segmentation improved security posture by preventing lateral movement between student and administrative network zones

Challenges & Engineering Solutions

Challenge

Running structured cabling through old campus buildings with minimal wall access points and conduit infrastructure.

Solution

Planned alternative cable routing via ceiling trays and installed surface-mounted conduit where required, working in phases to avoid disrupting academic activities.

Challenge

Legacy network equipment from different vendors with incompatible configurations caused initial integration issues.

Solution

Standardized on a managed switch platform and configured inter-vendor compatibility through IEEE 802.1Q VLAN standards and common routing protocols.

Challenge

Providing Wi-Fi coverage in areas with thick concrete walls causing significant signal attenuation.

Solution

Conducted RF signal surveys using Wi-Fi analyzer tools, strategically positioned APs with overlapping coverage cells, and configured optimal channel selection to eliminate dead zones.
